FAQ

The following are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive.  While this list is no substitute for the detailed discussion you and your doctor will share during your consultation, hopefully it will provide a good start on your path to your success.

Why see a urologist who specializes in male fertility?

Because fertility isn’t just about sperm—it’s about the entire male reproductive system.

A fertility-focused urologist is trained in both general urology and male fertility, which means they can:

  • Identify underlying issues (hormones, varicoceles, prostate, sexual function)
  • Treat the root cause—not just the symptom
  • Coordinate advanced fertility options when needed

Bottom line:
You don’t want someone who only looks at a semen analysis—you want someone who understands everything that impacts it and knows how to fix it.

How long should we try to get pregnant before seeing a doctor?

Under 35, you should seek medical evaluation for both partners if you have unsuccessfully tried to conceive for at least 1 year.

Over 35, you should seek medical help for both partners if you have unsuccessfully tried to conceive for at least 6 months.

Should I see a male fertility urologist as part of our workup?

Best practice: reproductive endocrinology and infertility + male fertility urology working together

Why (short and direct):
Because fertility is a two-partner problem, and each specialist covers a different half.

  • REI → optimizes the female side (ovulation, IVF, embryo quality)
  • Male fertility urologist → diagnoses and treats male issues (hormones, anatomy, sperm production)

Together they:

  • Catch treatable male factors (like varicocele or azoospermia)
  • Avoid jumping straight to IVF when it’s not necessary
  • Improve outcomes when IVF is needed
  • Reduce failed cycles, time, and cost

Bottom line:
You get a complete evaluation + better strategy, not a one-sided plan.

Skipping the male evaluation often means spending more to achieve less.
Including it gives couples the best chance at either natural pregnancy or a successful IVF outcome.

How soon can I schedule my consultation?

Most appointments can be scheduled within 1 week at the location most convenient to you.

Please call us at 310-422-9262 or use our online form to request a consultation.

What should I bring to the initial consultation?

Please bring any relevant test results and medical records you may already have. We can request them for your other doctors if you don’t have them available.

Most importantly, please bring any questions you may have. We believe a well-informed patient is essential to delivering the best results.

Does my partner need to join me during my consultation?

Involving your partner in your diagnosis and treatment can help you receive understanding and support. For men looking to overcome infertility, we encourage you to bring your partner to the initial consultation as infertility affects both members of the relationship. If you feel that having your spouse attend may be undesirable, please feel free to come by yourself.

Your consultation and treatments are always confidential. No information will be shared to anyone, including your partner or spouse, without your direct permission.

How soon can I begin treatment?

Treatment can begin as soon as soon as we have completed a thorough evaluation and diagnosis. Once this is complete, Dr. Zeitlin will work with you to develop the right solution for individual difficulties. Often treatment can begin on the day of the very first consultation.

Will treatment require surgery?

Every patient requires a personalized assessment and an individualized treatment program to deliver the best possible results. We are committed to compassionately work with you to decide on the optimal treatments that meet your personal needs. To that end, we will recommend non-surgical treatments whenever possible and all procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. Surgery will only be recommended when it provides the best possible results.

Do you treat out-of-town patients?

Yes. Many of our patients come to Los Angeles seeking the best medical care available. Contact us for more information for out-of-town patients.
